Repotting isn't something you do on a schedule — it's something you do when your plant tells you to. Here's how to read the signs and decide exactly when to repot.
How to Know When It's Time to Repot
My #1 indicator isn't the roots — it's the watering. When I’m watering multiple times a week, it’s time for a bigger pot to hold more moisture. I like to water every two weeks, and I’ll tolerate weekly depending on the plant but more than that is too much.
One important note: repotting stresses your plant. Often you can amend the soil instead — top-dress with Bios and nutrients to buy more time. But when watering becomes a daily chore, that's my signal it's genuinely time to size up.
Choosing Your Pot Size
The instinct is to jump way up in size so you never have to do it again. Resist it. A pot that's too big holds a huge volume of wet soil the small root system can't drink — and that soggy, unused soil is a fast track to root rot.
- Go up in small increments — usually just 1–2 inches wider in diameter than the current pot. It's far easier to manage watering and much safer against overwatering.
- You can go bigger if your soil is very airy and free-draining (lots of aeration means it won't stay waterlogged) — but if you're not sure, small steps are the forgiving choice.
- If you must go to a larger pot, bottom water but only until you think the bottom half of the soil is moist. This way the top half stays aerated and roots will be motivated to stretch out into the moist soil faster.
Choosing Your Pot Type
The material changes how the soil dries — match it to the plant:
- Terra cotta (unglazed clay) — porous, so it breathes and wicks moisture out through the walls, drying soil faster. Perfect for succulents, cacti and anything prone to rot that likes to dry out.
- Plastic (or glazed ceramic) — non-porous, holds moisture longer. Better for moisture-loving plants, orchids and thirsty tropicals that don't like drying out completely.
- The one non-negotiable: drainage holes. Whatever the material, the pot must have drainage holes so excess water can escape. No holes = water pools at the bottom = root rot. If you love a decorative pot with no hole, use it as a "cover pot" and keep the plant in a plain nursery pot inside it.
How to Prevent Transplant Shock with Microbes
Transplant shock is the setback — wilting, dropped leaves, sulking — that hits when roots get disturbed. The natural grower's secret weapon is microbes and a couple of gentle helpers, applied right at repotting:
- Plant Probiotic / Dry Fertilizer — Water into and mix into your fresh soil. The beneficial fungi and bacteria colonize the root zone fast, extend the root system, and help the plant find water and nutrients while it re-establishes.
- Yucca extract — water it in after repotting. As a natural surfactant it helps the fresh soil wet evenly, reduces root stress, and helps your roots absorb water.
Also: repot into moist (not soggy) soil, keep the plant out of harsh direct sun for a week or so while it recovers, and go easy on watering until you see new growth.
